Zest Printing raises money for Alzheimer’s Research UK

You may have read about our charity of the year – Alzheimer’s Research UK – in one of our
previous blogs. Now, member of the Zest staff Lee Davis is going the extra mile as we prepare to shave his beard and hair off in the name of fund raising. Here’s what Lee had to say…

It started as an innocent enough challenge set by a friend in late March earlier this year – no shaving for six months. It sounded good and, what’s more, I wouldn’t have to lift a finger – from April 1 to October 1, I didn’t have to shave.

I’ve grown a beard before over varying lengths of time, though they’ve usually been kept a lot neater and have taken just as much effort to maintain as remaining clean shaven – but this was something different…

It’s been interesting to note how the response to The Beard has been in a small – or should that be small-minded? – town.

No-one in London bats an eyelid, the response in Cologne was overwhelmingly positive, the locals in Brighton are too hip to care one way or the other and I was just one of many in Barcelona. But, in Eastbourne, I’ve garnered nothing but encouragement to remove it to the point where, next year, I’ll be raising money for BeatBullying

Really, it’s been great to gain the nickname Osama – I’ll be sad when that one goes the same way as The Beard. After all, who wouldn’t want to be associated with a man who has such strong convictions, has written his name into the history books for all he has done both in his home country and abroad, and whose legacy and effect on others will go on for a long time to come? No, wait, that’s Obama

Having seen how Alzheimer’s can affect a person – the deterioration of the mind causing distress and anguish, not just in the sufferer but in those who know and love them – I’m more than happy to shave it all off- but at a price!

I might have set the bar a little high with a target of £640, but why not? If I’m going to make a change to my personal appearance at the bequest of others, it may as well do some good. That £640 would, on its own, pay for 32 hours’ research into dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Apparently, losing the beard isn’t enough for the sadists in the office – the hair has to go too. That’s no issue…it’s thinning and graying, so why not!

If you feel the urge to see it all go just in time for winter, you can visit this JustGiving page to donate.
